monday update

pictorial proof that my life is good:
[and some ramblings because it's monday and i only slept 4 hours- but a great 4 hours!]

i started my set schedule this past weekend- [friday, saturday and sunday nights].
what a difference it makes to finally have a schedule.
i can already feel the sense of normalcy setting in.

monday's are going to be a little rough for me;
the turn-around from working nights is always that way.
especially now the calf cramps are becoming the norm and waking me from my blissful sleep.
grrrrr.
hate when i wake by myself and jank isn't there to stretch my calf for me.
i'm helpless without him. ridiculous but true.

of other important, ground-breaking news:
i was able to turn on christmas music today and not cringe.
i'm finally adjusting to the idea of the holidays without snow.
it definitely took awhile.
guess i'm an arizonian now.

i finally feel settled into the ER here.
my night shift crew is pretty great [although i still desperately miss my SLC crew].
we had a STEMI [heart attack for you laymen] walk in last night and we had him ready for the cath lab [where they open the blocked arteries in the heart] in 6 minutes.
that kind of speedy teamwork led to his life being saved and it's soul-stirring to think i'm a part of it.
i really do love what i do.

and finally, a short story to conclude these monday ramblings:
i mouthed off to a patient last week telling her:
"this isn't mcdonalds. you don't get to come in, place your order and be done in 5 minutes"
[in my defense, she was being particularly demanding for how busy we were]
yep, i definitely got reported to my charge nurse for that one!
my charge nurse's response?
"kayla, when's the last time you ate? i think you need food."
this yuma crew knows me already. kayla+hunger=CRANKY.
at least i didn't get written up, although my nickname is now 'happy meal'.

FYI

dearest readers of this blog:
[all 6 of you]

i found myself with an excess of energy tonight.
this is quite rare for me and i wasn't quite sure what to do with myself.
i decided to plant myself in front of this here blog and play catch-up.

you will notice plenty of new posts,
[not in chronological order because i didn't have that much energy]-
they're full of grammatical errors and low-quality pictures.
no need to thank me for this.
you are all very welcome.

and i just wanted to say thanks for sticking with me during this time of insanity.
i've requested to work weekends [fridays, saturdays and sundays] in an effort to stabilize our home life.
cuz let's be honest, it's not quite working right now.
not having a schedule is killing us!
that new schedule should take effect in december so we just have to survive one more month of this silliness.
added bonus- the new schedule will keep the baby out of daycare while she's still a newborn.
[i found out i have to return to work after 6 weeks instead of the 12 weeks i was planning on. pretty sure i cried the day i heard that news. stupid new employee rules]

anywaaaaays,
thanks for all the support.
and thanks for not getting mad when i don't return texts, don't answer my phone and ignore my emails.
you guys rock.

good night and happy halloween!

sometimes all you need is a moment to pause and reflect. i need to remember this.

i just woke up and i'm still a little tired so bear with me if this doesn't make sense.

last night was the first shift where i didn't feel like i had made the worst decision of my life.
going back to work full-time in an unorganized, crowded and vintage [by which i really mean gheeeettttooo!] ER has not been the most awesome thing i have ever done.
i miss my coworkers.
i miss knowing the ins and outs of a workplace.
oh how i hate being new.

but then last night happened.
and i got to save a life.
and hold the hand of a very scared patient and offer words of comfort.
and it felt so good.

i think the shift was such a good one because i read something inspiring before i went to work
[which let's be honest i never do. usually i'm running late and forgetting my snacks.... i require a lot of snacks. a ridiculous amount actually]
i was preparing my talk for sunday [ugh. ugh. ugh]
and i happened upon a sentence that was meant for soul.
and i cried.
happy tears.
it was as if someone took a great ball of heat and comfort and love and shoved it into my heart.
and that feeling has stayed with me since [along with some annoyingly persistent heartburn]

and that's all i have for words today.
i have to go work on what i'm going to say on sunday when i have to address a crowd about 'focus and priorities'.
let's be honest, i have neither focus nor priorities nor speaking skills.
should be a good time.

ps. the weather is changing down here in ole mexicano. the humidity is waning and the temps were under 100 [they were 99. but still] for the last few days. hallelujah for fall!

good and bad: a morning rant

good: woog was found!
bad: we received this news @ 0156. i had just barely fallen asleep [normal for me] and was enjoying a naughty dream with jake gyllenhaal thus i was thoroughly ticked when jank's phone rang.

good: woog appears driveable according to the officer @ 0156
bad: hearing that woog appears driveable does not inspire me to get out of bed, awaken my babe and package us all up to go pick up woog just to realize it's not driveable. 'just have it towed' i mumbled to jank, 'i'm pretty sure insurance will cover the fee'. jank has car towed. woog is now impounded and we [not insurance] have to pay the fee. jank is now mad at me- whoops. five guys for dinner me thinks.

good: i don't like being awake before 0900 and most days katers humors me and plays quietly in her crib until 8/9ish. i love her everyday for this.
bad: today she pooped herself awake and i was the lucky person who got to stumble out of bed and change a disgusting diaper @ 0700. so not cool.

good: leftover mile high fudge brownie pie for breakfast.
bad: i see absolutely no bad in this.

good: jank informed me last night that he only has 3 rotations left-- psych [which he started this am], the VA and a 3 week rotation in july that is TBA.
very good: we're almost done! words don't do my excitement justice.

and this concludes my morning tirade.
i'll now return to eating pie and watching tarzan with kate.
[oh man, nap time can't come soon enough today]
